Anesthesia for obese patients: experience of the Moulay Ismail Military Hospital in Meknes

Ayoub Maaroufi, Nouredine Jebbar, Abdellatif Diai, Ayoub Ouchen, El Akef Toufik, Jaouad Laoutid

Abstract: Obesity is a major public health problem and has become one of the most common co-morbidities in anesthesia. Consequently, anesthesiologists are increasingly confronted with the perioperative management of obese patients, which is characterized by its impact on all major body functions. An understanding of the pathophysiology and complications in this specific group of patients allows for safer and more effective care, as obesity constitutes a high risk for perioperative complications.  This work is a descriptive and analytical study conducted at the Department of Anesthesiology of the Moulay Ismail Military Hospital in Meknes over a 10-month period in 2025.  We collected epidemiological data, main medical history and risk factors, anomalies revealed during clinical examination and perioperative complementary tests, anesthetic particularities, perioperative complications and their management, and ultimately the operational strategy.  The main objectives of this study are to determine the prevalence of this patient population in the hospital’s anesthesiology practice, to highlight the difficulties and complications encountered in their perioperative management, to report the specific features of this category of patients in light of recent literature data, and to evaluate our management in accordance with the recommendations of scientific societies.

Construction And Evaluation Of Modular Aeroponics System For Small Scale Seed Yam Production

Onyemaechi Maxwell Chinedu

Abstract: Yam stores relatively longer than most root crops and this attribute have gained it recognition as a food security crop in Nigeria. However, inadequate access and high cost of seed yams have prevented farmers from intensive sustainable production. New technologies to increase and make available quality seed yams to farmers can boost yam production, increase food security and improve farmers livelihoods. In this regard, construction and evaluation of modular aeroponics system for small scale seed yam production was carried out. The objective is to design and construct small modular aeroponics system for the production of seed yam also to evaluate the feasibility of generating seed yams from modular aeroponics system. Results of the technical evaluation of the modular aeroponics systems showed that all the installed components worked perfectly according to their specifications. The results of directly planted vines were impressive as plants and vines suspended in air continued growing normally with the development of new roots and shoots. Within 10 days, more than 50% of the vines produced roots and in week 3 after planting, 85–100% of the direct vine cuttings produced roots on the modular aeroponics system. Agronomic evaluation of vines planted on the modular aeroponics systems showed a progressive growth in all the parameters measured indicating the functionality of the system. The study demonstrates the potentials of modular aeroponics systems in the production of clean materials for small- medium scale seed yam production venture.

Persons with Disabilities should be Encouraged to Engage in Regular Health-oriented Physical Activities

Siniša Franjić

Abstract: In consideration of the numerous unhealthy elements prevalent in contemporary lifestyles, particularly in urban settings, it is vital to continuously highlight the beneficial effects of physical exercise on personal well-being. In this context, it is crucial to focus on the involvement of all individuals, particularly those with disabilities, in recreational pursuits. These activities not only promote enhancements in functional capabilities and the health of the musculoskeletal system but also play an essential role in fostering social integration through collective exercise. Individuals with disabilities should be motivated to participate in consistent health-focused physical activities, thus aiding in the overall advancement of both individual and community health. This strategy represents a critical measure towards long-term illness prevention and the maintenance of public health.

Does Environmental Plastic Exposure Act as an Invisible Opponent in Sport Injury Recovery and Athletic Performance?

Dario Turco

Abstract: The global proliferation of plastic materials has led to the widespread presence of micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) across environmental and biological systems, raising increasing concerns regarding their potential implications for human health. While a growing body of literature has investigated the toxicological effects of MNP exposure, research has largely focused on general populations, with limited attention to physically active individuals. Athletes represent a distinct physiological subgroup characterized by elevated ventilation rates, increased metabolic demands, and frequent interaction with synthetic environments, all of which may influence exposure pathways and biological responses to environmental contaminants. This article aims to provide a critical synthesis of current evidence on MNP exposure and its potential relevance to exercise physiology and sports medicine. Drawing on data from environmental science, toxicology, and human physiology, we examine the principal exposure pathways (inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact) and discuss interactions between MNPs and key biological systems involved in athletic performance and recovery, including the respiratory, gastrointestinal, endocrine, nervous, and musculoskeletal systems. Particular attention is given to processes such as oxidative stress, inflammation, endocrine disruption and alterations in the gut microbiome, which may influence exercise adaptation and post-injury recovery. This work highlights MNP exposure as a potential environmental factor in sports science; however, the relationships between MNP exposure and performance outcomes remain to be established. Clarifying the relevance and the underlying mechanisms of these effects will be essential to define their potential health and performance implications and to guide evidence-based prevention and/or mitigation strategies within athletic environments.
